I feel like revisiting my current and past cars over the next few weeks while I am slow at work. Up first is my current beater truck “Towburban” a 1999 GMC Suburban 5.7 4WD now with 197k on the clock.

Kinja'd!!!

I bought the truck about a year ago because I needed a quick cheap vehicle. I had blow the motor in my previous car and constantly borrowing family vehicles was getting ridiculous. So I bought Towburban, I am the 5th owner of this truck, and it has had a very very hard life on its way. When I bought it the gas tank was rusted (still leaks even after a new tank), the front sway bar was sitting in the back (still not installed), and the AC compressor exploding (still there not fixed). I immediately put the truck to use as soon as I got it picking up a motor for my old car so it can be fixed by my friend who bought it, and towing it up to his family’s house in upstate ME.

Well the first issue came shortly after that, she started running on only 7 cylinders and a constant misfires and eating of plug number 6. I started keeping plugs in my glove box to change every few miles or so just to keep her going. So first to replace was the wonderful spider injector system designed by GM. After about 10 hours in my garage it was done

Alas this wasn’t the last time I would have the top of the engine off as shortly after the intake manifold gaskets blew out and it all had to come back out again.

After a rough winter of my Dad driving it to and from the cape with a snow blower, and accidentally leaving it in 4low on the highway. The intake gaskets went, 16 hours later it was together, only to find out the distributor is broken, and stuck at -5Deg timing. But she still runs like that so not fixing it. It did however blow a cooling hose on the way home which then had to get replaced. This truck likes to fight me at every corner.

Spring rolled around and back to work she went, this time getting my new riding mower for the house .

And many many trips to Home Depot for parts for my house. Next up was as nice long trip to upstate ME to pick up a Lotus Europa.

Well after this trip the brakes felt beyond spongy and did not seem to be working well. So time to order some pads and rotors. Well pads and Rotors ended up being Pads, Rotors, Calipers, and a brake line fix that exploded during bleeding. This was the carnage

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Yeah those brakes were not doing much. Works a lot better now and off she went to her parking spot till she was needed again.

Kinja'd!!!

Well I realized I needed to use her for getting parts soon, went to start her up and nothing, battery was flat. Grab the jumper pack and boom shes running again, but still has trouble restarting. Pull into the driveway after a 20 min drive, shut it off and nothing on restart, no click no nothing. Put the new battery in, and still nothing. Looks like the starter is dead. Well right now shes blocking both working cars in so backwards roll into the front law it goes.

Kinja'd!!!

We then had a mod-meet while waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Off to the shop she went to get a starter replaced. The started had rusted/corroded so badly that the wires just broke on it. So while I had the truck at the shop I decided to finally wire in my fog lights.

Kinja'd!!!

I still have some repairs to do, like the Front Sway Bar and she needs ball joints on the passenger side. But those will probably have to wait a little bit. Hopefully I get another 2 years out of her. But I might have to start being nicer to her for that to happen. I did pick up a visor for the top to pretty her up a little bit. Stay tuned to see which of my 10 past/present Vehicles I discuss next.

I don’t know if I could have resisted messing with the engine/cam with the top end torn down. Vortecs!

I debated it but changing the Cam would have added another few hours that I did not want to take on it. Also given how rusted and beat up the truck was its not worth it.

Damn, that’s a hard life. I’m in MA if there’s anything I can do to help.

My Wife’s family owns a garage in Swampscott so it makes repairs easy. We should get some MA Oppos together for a meet some time.
